WOE card Likeness Looter doesn't work

The Wilds of Eldraine card Likeness Looter doesn't work at all. The first effect doesn't trigger, and the mana field doesn't even appear around the support gem, let alone trigger. I played it with its companion card Virtue of Knowledge and that didn't help.
